The success of the 《The Voices Of Distant Star》in 2002 made Makoto Shinkai become very famous, and his name spread around the world quickly!
People marvel at the play which is full of originalities and affection. And they also marvel at the CG. Besides those, they are astonished that the whole play is made by himself except that the music is set by Tenmon and the heroine is dubbed by Shinohara Mika, his girl friend.
The whole work including intendance, performance, script, art, pictures, editing… was done by himself in his own personal computer (Power Mac 400MHz). And also he even dubbed the main actor by himself.
《The Voices Of Distant Star》have been issued in 16 countries outside Japan. The total distribution of DVD has been over 110,000. Owing to the play, he became a super star in the Japanese cartoon circles.
His story is like a fairy tale evoking truth, kindness and beauty. The children he described don't need to worry about saving the world and be puzzled by the complex relations between the people. His world is very big, big enough to hold the warships which can be able to jump between the spaces and the high tower to control the parallel world. And also his world is very small, small enough to hold only two children waiting the messages from each other, a dream in which the white aircraft was flying in the sky and the promises which are doomed to come true. Those children grow with the love of each other. Once beyond the pangs in reality, beyond the uncertain in the hearts, love becomes the cling of two hearts.
Such a story, such a poem, such a fairy tale, such Makoto Shinkai, you may forget his name, but the deep move that you once had, will forever be carved in your heart.

《Distant world》

Makoto Shinkai started it from 1997 and finished it in 1999, it is a white and black short cartoon film. Old film effects, paper-plane flying towards the white clouds, young men and women in love, pictures of ordinary life, train and trolleybus, underground subway, embracement, whisper, caress, as well as the blue tune carry through from beginning to end. The film feels like experimental cartoon, Pen-sketching alternating with 2D or 3D scene, shots cut from one to another, and these all tell a love story at arm’s length.
Author’s feelings: I have spent about 100 thousand yen (RMB7000) on this short film, since it was the time I started to work, I didn’t have enough money. The computer I used then was only 120MHz and 32M memory, so the film came out to be white and black. You can also find my original style in this film.

《She and her cat》

The five-minute cartoon film was made in 1999 and 2000, it is also black and white, but his style of 2D cartoon came to maturity in this film. The film begins with daily life, a pretty girl with long hair and her lovely cat .The film is based on the girl’s feelings, it tells us aseptic life together with hurt and relief in heart. The exercise of scene expresses the feelings to the point.

The film is 25 only minutes, but it really sends shock wave in Japan cartoon. , this also makes his personal cartoon well spoken of.
