Bread乐队是洛杉机的一支柔情摇滚乐队。它虽体只维持了不到4年的时间，却有多达6张的唱片成为金唱片。"面包"是在1969年由3个录音室里的演奏乐手组建的，他们是来俄克拉何马州塔尔萨的David Gates、来自田纳西州的James Griffin和Robb Royer。

　　David Gates在Pleasure Fair乐队时就曾经出过一张唱片。当时Robb Royer是Pleasure Fair乐队的一名成员，并且James Griffin也为此乐队写过歌曲。他们不但是能弹奏多种乐器的音乐家，而且还是作曲家。

　　他们的歌曲创作方式在其最佳状态时，可以把摇滚乐的充沛的情感力量与主流民歌的流畅风格结合起来。他们在Elektra公司录制的第1张虽不很成功但却受到评论界肯定的唱片，接着创作了很多成功的作品：歌曲《Make It with You》、《If》、《Baby I'm a Want You》和《The Guitar Man》。所有这些歌曲以及其他一些作品都突出了David Gates响亮的歌喉、纯正的音色和朴实无华的男高音特色。

　　在他们的第一张专辑中由Jim Gordon担任鼓手，后来来自加利福尼亚的Mike botts也加人了乐队，并成了固定的打击乐器手。在第3、4张唱片《Mana》和《Baby I'm a Want You》出版之前，Robb Royer离开了乐队，另一个键盘手Larry Knechtel代替了他的位置。又一张唱片《Guitar Man》出版后，由于David Gates和James Griffin意见分歧，这个乐队宣告解散了。James Griffin和David Gates都成了自由乐手。

　　1976年末，"面包"乐队重新组建，录制了唱片《Lost Without Your Love》，但不到1年乐队再次解散。虽然如此David Gates却获得了很多成功的单曲：例如《Never Let Her Go》和《The Goodbye Girl》。
